Assistant Secretary for Science, circa 1963-1986 Records.

These records document the administration, under David Challinor, of the science bureaus of the Smithsonian, circa 1975-1985, and the International Environmental Sciences Program (IESP) during a period of intense environmental activity by the Institution. The IESP funded work in India, Egypt, Aldabra, and Brazil, among others. A subprogram of the IESP was the Environmental Sciences Program (ESP), which primarily funded research on the tropical ecosystem at STRI and the temperate ecosystem at CBCES. Smithsonian scientists were important participants in environmental organizations such as the Endangered Species Scientific Authority, the International Convention Advisory Commission, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna, and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. These records consist of correspondence and memoranda concerning operation of the science bureaus: their budgets, personnel, facilities, collections, and the filling of high level positions. Also included are files documenting the IESP and ESP and Smithsonian participation in other environmental organizations, and grant applications for scientific projects.
